Exploring an Abandoned Railroad Bridge with Rotted Ties, Covington, Indiana
From what I can figure out, the location of this railroad crossing over the Wabash River in Covington, Indiana dates back to 1869. However, the only vestiges of the original crossing is the massive cut stone bridge abutments. Information on the website Bridge Hunter states that the first bridge at this location was constructed by a Toledo bridge building company for the Indianapolis Bloomington & Western Railway.
At some point that bridge was removed and this steel through truss bridge was constructed. In this picture taken from the west banks of the Wabash River, you can see the tower of the 1859 Fountain County Courthouse that was replaced with the current courthouse in 1937. In this photo you can see how close the Wabash River is to swallowing the railroad bridge during the 1913 flood.
The steel through truss bridge stood until 1923 when the current trestle was built along with new piers in the river. This girder bridge was in use up until about 1982 when Conrail abandoned the line.

Three Phantom Bridges Discovered Along a Ghost Road Near Maybee, Michigan, Large Holes in Bridge

I did some research and found out after talking to the county that the bridge was built around 1920. The main concrete arch bridge is around 82 feet long while the two smaller bridges are about 30 feet long each. The road was closed on July 30th, 1987. About 21 years later on March 12th, 2008, the bridge was removed from the national bridge index. The county also informed me that the James Road...
Abandoned Level 2 Ghost Town Discovered in Ohio County, Indiana, Watts Mill, Bear Branch

Bear Branch, Indiana is one of those very small Indiana towns that you may have heard of but probably have never been to. It’s not a “Ghost Town” but it definitely was a much busier town in the past. Original settler George French died in 1857 and is buried on a local farm. His two sons, Peter & John French are buried at the Olive Branch Cemetery just South of town. Bear Branch and Pike Townshi...

any ticks this trip?
Fortunately no! LOL!
Hey my girlfriend grew up in Hartford City and we can't see that Hartford City is anything like Hartford ghost town can somebody explain that to us
Im 19 and only went to Coney Island like 4 or 5 times when I was really young compared to the dozens of times I went to kings island. Wish kids my age were more interested in engaging with their local community and sacred landmarks like Coney Island. When they talk about the ball room it genuinely sounds like a fictional story because NOBODY my age will dance or be merry. Happy I watched this vid
Another great find and a great video
I wanted to put up a drone and get some aerial footage of the beast but the city jail was nearby and blocked my transmission.
John Barry was the first Commodore of the US Navy.
I LIVE ON DOWNEY. ON MY ROAD WAS THAYERS GAS STATION & GENERAL STORE. FARMHOUSE BUILT 1870 I WAS TOLD IT WAS A POST OFFICE BEFORE 1900. AN PAST SOUTH FORK ON DOWNEY WAS A SCHOOL HOUSE CLOSE TO THE KNIGGA HOUSE WHERE MY DAD ATENED WHEN HE WAS A KID. THERE IS A CEMERTARY ON DOWNEY ON THE OLD HAYS FARM & ONE ON SOUTHFORK CALL THE DOWNEY CEMERTARY ON THE WORKS FARM.
I believe some of that is mentioned in the video.
Kinda random question but why is the salamonie res dry? Or at least it was in April.
I have no idea.
Awesome trestle! Beautiful! Thanks for sharing it with us!👍
Glad you enjoyed it!!! So what type of muscle car do you own?
Satolli, another awesome history lesson and you nailed it. "Maybe 20 years ago I would have"... Cheers, Mate.
Yeah, those ties were looking pretty soft...
I traced it with your coordinates. East of the trestle it terminates after the woods and becomes a walk/bike trail, but Northwest of the bridge, the main line is still active and leads to a few sidings to a company called Flex-N-Gate and also goes to what appears to be a locomotive repair shop.
I believe you are correct!
This is so awesome! Nothing intrigues me more than finding old bridges and ruminants of rail roads. The highways (ghosts) of the past that used to bustling with activity.
I agree 100%!
👍👍
I crossed the river hundreds of times in the Seventies, going in and out of Covington. I don't remember that railroad bridge. Is it North or South of the SR bridge?
It's south of the SR bridge.
@@historyinyourownbackyard2363 Thanks. The SR bridge was still an iron bridge in the Seventies. In fact, it and every Wabash bridge South to Terre Haute was still iron at that time. I think they are all replaced now.
Very interesting. I love the old railroad items.
They are a lot of fun to discover and explore.
Id love to know where the main engine was that’s cool but sad to
Dude you were within a mile of an old church built on Cassidy creek.
I've been going to that place since 1970 and that bridge is always looked like that. LOL. My uncle was born in Carlisle in 1927
got time, and no money for this? put time into something that counts. like, how much money would it take to get rid of the bridge. It's trash. I'm a historian to a certain degree, but things get stupid.
Excellent interview! Such exciting plans for a beautiful building, neighborhood and city.
It is a beautiful building.
Loved my trips to Perryville over the years!
Neat town!
They actually failed to mention there is the remnants of what used to be a small theater on the second floor!
They didn't say a word to me about that. :(
You really need to reset your UA-cam account, because I couldn't comment on any of your videos.
What do you mean by "reset"?
@@historyinyourownbackyard2363 I don't know. I'm just upset that it won't let me comment In your 4 month old video on Coney Island. I tried to comment about letting the river flood CSO's music venue to see how they'll feel but it keeps disappearing. There is no violence or death threats, it's free speech. I don't know if it's your UA-cam account or is it UA-cam itself but it's upsetting me.
@@themeparkreconnoiter9787 I don't know why your comment won't post. There's no restrictions. Try just posting the word "Test" and let's see if that appears.
@@historyinyourownbackyard2363 or safe mode. Anyway, I tested it out typing in my previous message what I said about the CSO's music venue but it still vanished then I tested typing in "test" it constantly did the same thing. So if your account isn't on safe mode, then it really is UA-cam
@@historyinyourownbackyard2363 Or on safe mode, anyway I've tested it commenting again on what will to the CSO'S music venue, I figured UA-cam that was causing the problems
Where was this covered bridge that was West of town?
Very nice. I wish humans never learned how to vandalize property. No respect for property.
My dad had a 1948 Dodge Power Wagon but sometime in the early 70's some neighbor kids set it on fire and burned the cab and the bed. He ended up selling what was left of it to someone interested in restoring it.
Sorry to hear that.
We are gonna need trains to and from everywhere for most of us to be able to afford to stop and see awesome places. And to have something to spend when we get there. Too bad we dismantled so much rail. Cars are polluting and only becoming more expensive.
Surely the Cincinnati Historical Society has an image - perhaps the newspaper photo - of the set painting? Because Kronberg Castle in Denmark, however much it may have inspired Shakespeare, looks nothing like that.
Them hills on top of the tunnell, used to have concrete steps to walk over and around with out much trees...seen on a postcard from like 1903, but since penny court burnt i haven't heen able to find this pic (drawn) recently
I did not know that! Thanks!

No, just the opposite. A level 1 Ghost Town is completely gone. Level 4 still has people living in town.
Thanks. I got it backwards.
@@fr57ujf no problem.
I lived on Sutton Rd only about 300’ from Coney front gate from the early 50’s. Dad built the home after getting hired by Cincinnati Fire department. Across my home was a large group boys home called Woodmar Farm. My grandfather was born inside the park in the 1800’s when called Parkers Grove because his parents lived in the park. They ran the pony track, and was the park caretakers off season. My grandfather went on to run the Lake Como’s canoes, and had the Grumman corporation change canoes from wooden to a new aluminum model called the Grumman Canoe Coney Island edition. My grandmother was Coney’s head cashier at Moonlite Gardens. I never paid park admission or paid for cafeteria food. Believe the Rossi firework company got its start at Coney shooting fireworks off the once huge island.
Neat story!
Been there, been through it. Very neat, historic place. Very close to the collapsed tunnel 21 as well.
Love the old cemeteries. So nice to see that some of the buildings and homes have been preserved. Beautiful area all around.
Yes it is.
They got the wrong date of accident.I helped pull the guy out of the car.He was drunk and didn't want us to pull him out.The car landed upside down in water against bridge buttment.By the time we finally got him out of the driver's side .We found that there was a girl still in the car on the passenger side completely under water. She had already passed. The guy was from Big Stone Gap.Nick name was Bad Eye.Reason I know the date was wrong.I started working in the Mines on 2-14-1974 and I was already working in mines a year or more
Thanks for the info!

Likely built with private funds. The "State" did not build it as VDOT. The question is who dismantled the bridge as a 1930s to 1980s approved structure under the former US Harbors & Rivers. Example: King's Highway Bridge by Nick Wright in now extinct Nansemond County, Virginia, over the Nansemond River, in 1924. Era of early automobiles & combustion engines in transportation: very relevant architecture remaining as a key example of early era Bridges of that era of transportation. At the end of the day: Congressional record, Army Corps of Engineers (1920s-1930s formal ACOE name check rec'd). Crossings over waterways... the recordss were not destroyed, they are simply not easily located in modern Virginia Department of Transportation records as a privately built, pre-VDOT structure.
Satolli, another enjoyable episode in history. Thank you for all that you do. Will Jacquelyn be hosting any future episodes? Cheers, Mate.
I'm not sure. It all depends on who is available.
Cool find! Beautiful area there at Pennington Gap! Thanks for sharing!👍
